When it comes to anti-ageing, the neck and décolletage are often the first areas to show fine lines, sun damage, and skin laxity. Radio Frequency (RF) skin tightening is one of the most effective non-invasive treatments for improving skin texture and firmness in these delicate zones. But this area requires extra care and precision.
If you're offering RF treatments in your salon or learning through your body contouring course, here are five important things to remember when treating the neck and décolletage area safely and effectively.
1. Avoid the Midline (Heart Area)
RF should never be applied directly over the centre of the chest. Avoid the sternum and heart zone completely. Even though the RF energy used is safe for aesthetic use, this area covers sensitive structures like the heart, thymus, and major arteries. Stick to treating the sides of the chest only – from the collarbone outwards toward the shoulders.
2. Use Gentle, Continuous Movements
The skin on the neck and chest is thinner and more delicate than other areas. Apply only light pressure and keep the RF handle moving the entire time. Slow circular or gliding motions are best. Never hold the handle in one spot, as this can create heat buildup and discomfort for the client.
3. Lower Your Intensity Settings
RF settings for the décolletage should always be lower than those used for the body. Facial settings are usually appropriate. You only need gentle dermal heating to stimulate collagen in this area. If your machine has a facial mode, be sure to use it. Less is more when working near the neck and chest.
4. Know Your Contraindications
Before performing RF, complete a full consultation. Be aware of contraindications specific to this area. Avoid treating over pacemakers, metal implants in the chest, recent injectables, active infections, or open skin. RF should also be avoided during pregnancy as a precaution.
5. Educate Your Clients About Results
Clients might expect an instant lift, but real results take time. Collagen and elastin production after RF builds gradually. Let them know that results improve over 4 to 6 weeks and that a course of treatments will deliver the best outcome. Recommend hydration, sun protection, and gentle aftercare to maintain results.
Final Thoughts
Treating the neck and décolletage with RF can give stunning results when done correctly. It’s a high-value add-on for your salon but must be approached with knowledge, precision, and care. Always prioritise safety, use correct mapping, and educate your clients for long-term success.
