The Ultimate Guide to Muscle Stimulation HiEMT: Who Can & Can’t Get Treatment

If you’re considering High-Intensity Electromagnetic Therapy (HiEMT) for muscle stimulation and body contouring, it’s crucial to know who is eligible and who should avoid this treatment.

HiEMT is a powerful technology—it’s not your average TENS unit or light muscle stimulator. It works by using high-intensity electromagnetic pulses to contract muscles far beyond what’s possible with exercise alone. But with great power comes great responsibility!
Today, we’re diving deep into:
✅ Who CANNOT have HiEMT (and why)
✅ What to do about jewellery & metal implants
✅ How to determine if a client is safe for treatment
And of course, if you’re a salon owner or body contouring technician, this is a must-read for ensuring safe, professional treatments! Let’s get started.
Who CANNOT Have HiEMT? (Non-Negotiable Contraindications)
If a client has ANY of the conditions listed below, they are NOT suitable for HiEMT treatments. This isn’t just a precaution—it’s a serious safety concern.
🚨 Absolute Contraindications (Treatment is NOT Allowed)
If the client has any of the following conditions, HiEMT should NOT be performed:
Pacemakers or other electronic implants – Can interfere with device function.
Metal implants in the treatment area – Can heat up and cause burns or damage.
Pregnancy or nursing – No studies confirm safety, so it’s a no-go.
Cancer or tumors – Stimulation may affect cancer cell activity.
Epilepsy – Risk of triggering seizures.
Severe cardiovascular conditions (Heart disease, thrombosis, thrombophlebitis) – Increased blood flow can be dangerous.
Diabetes (Uncontrolled) – Potential circulation and healing complications.
Organ failure (Kidney, liver, or heart disease) – Treatment may stress the body.
Acute inflammation, unhealed wounds, skin infections – The area needs to fully heal first.
Neurological disorders (Including Bell’s Palsy & nervous system conditions) – Could trigger nerve issues.
IUD (Copper or Hormonal) – Stomach treatment is NOT recommended.
Hip replacements or large joint implants – Applicators should NOT be placed near metal.
Varicose veins (Severe cases) – Increased circulation can make symptoms worse.
High cholesterol or triglycerides – Treatment impacts fat metabolism.
Being under the influence of drugs or alcohol – Can impact body response.
👉 If a client selects ANY of these on a consent form, they should NOT proceed with HiEMT.
Jewellery & Metal During HiEMT – What You Need to Know
Can Clients Wear Jewellery?
Jewellery should always be removed before treatment whenever possible. However, if removal isn’t an option:
✔ Earrings – Small studs may be okay if far from the treatment area. Large or dangling earrings should be removed.
✔ Permanent/Soldered Jewellery – Must be fully covered with thick fabric, medical tape, or padding to prevent heating.
❌ Treatment should NEVER be applied directly over jewellery—even if covered.
✔ Glasses – Can be worn if not in the treatment area.
Metal Implants: How Far is Safe?
HiEMT uses strong electromagnetic fields, and placing it too close to metal implants is dangerous. Here’s how to determine safe distances:
🚨 If a Client Has an IUD (Intrauterine Device)
Copper IUDs → Absolutely NO stomach treatments. The metal can heat up and cause severe pain.
Hormonal IUDs → Still NOT recommended over the stomach. Other areas (arms, glutes, thighs) may be okay with doctor clearance.
🚨 If a Client Has a Hip Replacement
Treatment should NOT be performed on the stomach, glutes, or thighs.
The implant can heat up and cause burns or discomfort.
General rule: If there’s metal anywhere in the body, keep treatment at least 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) away.
🚨 If a Client Has Metal in Their Limbs (Wrist, Knee, etc.)
Metal in wrist? → Avoid treating triceps/biceps.
Metal in leg/knee? → Avoid treating thighs and glutes.
👉 If a client has metal in the body, always check distance and never risk applying HiEMT over or near the implant.
Final Answer: Who Can Actually Get HiEMT?
If a client is healthy, has no metal implants, is not pregnant, and has no major medical conditions, then HiEMT may be suitable!
But remember:
✅ Every client must complete a consent form.
✅ If they have ANY contraindications, they cannot proceed.
✅ Always follow safe distances for metal implants.
✅ Jewellery should be removed or fully covered, and HiEMT should NEVER be placed directly over it.
